Lidé pěstují rýži a definují svoji zemi půdou a vodou.

“Ours”

Duc Minh Vu and Minh Thang Pham, are Students in the Academy of Fine Art and contemporary Czech artists of Vietnamese descent. Their artistic practices are overlapped between the personal sphere and the public one, or vise versa between the political and the private life, where they examine their relationship with their families in comparison with the Czech society in which they live.

In their current exhibition ‘Ours’ in the Artivist Lab gallery, the artists evoke memories of their immigrant parents and investigating their signs of language, they are carefully embracing and assimilating their cultural heritage into their current Czech culture, drawing similarities and differences within their identities as descendants of Vietnamese origin and as Czech citizens.

Duc Minh Vu contracts with the semiotic of his mother tongue, particularly with the sign “Nước” which employs a new dictionary in the Czech language, signifying the synonyms words ‘WATER’, ‘COUNTRY’, ‘LAND’, ‘STATE’, ‘NATION’, ‘LAND’, ‘MOTHERLAND’, ‘SOIL’, ‘EARTH’, ‘GROUND’. There is no coincidence the signs ‘water’ and ‘country’ have the same signifiers in the Vietnamese language. The full form of the sign “country” is “Đất nước”, where the first component addresses to ‘Country’ and the latter to ‘Water’. This reflects the mindset of the Vietnamese society, which formed from an agricultural lifestyle, where the people are cultivating wet rice, and define their country by land and water. In Vietnam there is more enthusiasm toward ‘water’ than ‘Land’, and therefore, “nước” for water is also the shortened form of country.

Minh’s dictionary evolves new abstracted imagery which portrays in a series of video works, that the artist produces from pictorial symbols and objects. In his videos, the spectator could see familiar objects that transformed as a result of video manipulation into abstraction that signified the words.

With the use of pen drawing, Minh Thang Pham is reconstructing the memories of his parents pathing their way to the new Czech society, and suggesting through these drawings, a new mode of communication, narrowing the cultural gaps that stand between the artist and his parents. The communication is offered as a substitute for a real one, directed to the lack of close relationship in the Vietnamese society between the parents to their children, due to strain labor commitments by the parents to give their descendants a better future. Thang is imagining in the reconstructed memories, his parents’ first encounter with the snowflakes when they first immigrated to Europe, in another example, he portrays his parents’ cars, as an attribute of their evolved socioeconomic status during the years.

Thang is not only reconstructing memories by drawings but also extend them into another form of communication address to the Czech majority through mail art. Each reconstructed memory has become a postcard that carries also the personal narrative that drives the artist to the remembrance.

The exhibition ‘Ours’, with its title, is addressed to the artists’ community, relations, and friendships, to what they have in common in terms of heritage, past, views on their culture, and its perception. “Ours” acts on its poetic sphere, it is ambiguous, melodious, and hides some imagined meanings. It is welcoming a transfer of cultural assets by the hand of minorities on forth to the hand of majority society, applying opportunities for social mobilization and desire to find similarities and solidarity between the groups, in order to rethink the current status quo.
